Seriously need advice.....,
I recently moved to an area where DSL isn't available, so I was forced to get dial-up. My kbps is 19.2 - isn't this extremely slow? What can I do to optimize my speed without having to upgrade my service to cable (too expensive)? Do the advertised dial-up optimizing programs really help, and which is best?
I'll try anything - please help.

There is no way to make a dialup line faster, there's only so much it can do, the optimization programs usually just use compression to make it seem faster, this is usually at the expense of image quality. 19.2 is a bit slow though, when I had dialup I had problems getting over 28, called the phone company and told them I had static on my lines (they only guaranteed speeds up to 19k, so I couldn't complain about that, so I made up the static so they'd check the lines) A guy came out and found my line went down the street a bit and came back and went on the other way, he spliced out the extra and I was getting low 50k speeds after that.

Thanks - I tried that once and they said there was nothing wrong, but the truth is I do have static so I guess I should just keep complaining louder & louder until someone actually comes out & checks.
So, from what you're saying, though, I probably wouldn't get any faster speeds even if I switched ISP's? |

You're probably SOL w/o switching to another system.
Check with your local ISPs about Wi-Fi links. There was a thread in the 'living rural' forum, not sure how buried it is though atm.
