We are migrating from cable modem internet and TV to streaming. The ISP will give each home a free Fire Stick and we will need an Amazon account. How do they control what TV channels we get?
What adapter is needed from the Stick to the analog TV which has no HDMI?
They say the Stick remote will control everything and the wireless signal for the Stick is the home computer.
Thanks.

I have no tech info, but we have a Firestick and it is plugged into the TV, so I doubt an analog TV would do the trick. We still need the separate volume control for the sound bar.

We don't get "channels"---it's pretty random what the Firestick can get. Different one day to the next depending on the available streaming services. We found you almost need a name or title to plug into the search, or you'll spend hours just randomly searching and getting past Asian anime, lol.

We love it though, can't beat the "price", lol.

Your ISP doesn't control anything, you control everything. FireTV stick uses wifi to access the internet, your home computer has nothing to do with it.

Your ISP is doing a lot of 'hand wave-um' and assuming you won't press them for details. They say your computer will control the Wi-Fi. Actually a router/Wireless Gateway will control your Wi-FI. As far as a TV with only an analog input available, you may be out of luck getting such a TV to work without some kind of adapter box similar to the Cable aaptter box I suspect you use now.

I got rid of our last analog only TV several years ago when I 'upgraded' to a cheap small flatscreen that was on sale at Walmart.

Is your ISP just an ISP? Or are they also a cable TV provider? A Fire stick is basically just a small device/computer that brings programing through apps (like a smartphone). So you may have Netflix, Prime, Disney+, etc. There are some apps on there that will get you free TV programming, but depending on what you are looking for, a separate subscription may be required (e.g. Hulu, YoutubeTV, Fubo, etc.).

Are you retaining your cable TV service? If not, then there's nothing to control. If you are, you'll need an app on the Fire Stick to access your subscription. For example, Xfinity has an app.

You can check out Amazon to see what devices are supported by the Fire Stick. It should support most soundbars, receivers, etc. Unfortunately, if you don't have an HDMI port on your TV, you'll need a converter like HDMI to Component or HDMI to RCA, etc. No idea what those things will cost or if it would just be more worthwhile to upgrade the TV.

This right here. Your ISP will have you download an app that you will login to. This will give you Live TV and only they control only those "Live TV Channels". If you download other apps, like Netflix or whatever, they can't control that. The Firestick controls turning your TV on and off and the volume so you won't need 2 remotes.

Your provider is wearing two hats, ISP and cable. Your provider as your ISP has nothing to do with what you choose to view. Your provider as your cable service is one of many TV services you can access with your FireTV stick, but it has nothing to do with your who is your ISP. In fact you can take your FireTV stick to somebody else's house and you will have access to the exact same content.

Yeah, we took our Roku to Europe and it worked in all the TVs we came across. Just carried the HDMI cable with us. It was great to have in an area with few to none English channels.

Yes.........

The 100 (+) year old cable company provides cable TV and high speed internet. The home computer has wi-fi since laptops in bedrooms connect fine. In some weeks they are forcing all customers, who wish to receive their services, to switch to their streaming services (internet and TV) by giving all households one Fire Stick. If you want to use more than one TV you have to buy your own stick for each TV.

The internet and TV will both be "streaming." No modem, no cable box, no wires from outside. Changes in the industry may be why they are moving in that direction. They have gouged and ripped off people for decades so this new streaming must benefit them in some way or technology is forcing it.

A friend has already switched voluntarily weeks ago. They have a Fire Stick and internet. They needed an Amazon account to access the "company's TV channels (those channels that they choose to be included in a package - they have more than one "TV" packages.
They must control the channels they give in each package.

Not concerned with other services we could use the Stick for. Netflix, etc. forget all of that.
The basic plus TV channel package and the high speed internet we have now will both become streaming once we switch.
We want their TV package because of the channels we desire.

I have a photo of the Roku to TV (without HDMI) adapter- cable somewhere and post it later.

Who is this cable company that is dropping traditional cable services?

Your laptops connect directly to your wifi access point. Your home computer has nothing to do with your laptop's ability to connect via wifi.

Unless your ISP is a phone company that will provide you with 5G, then there is a wire from outside.

Correct you need a free Amazon account to use a FireTV stick.

There is no such thing as internet service becoming streaming. Streaming is not a type of internet access, it only applies to TV services.
