I have had the same yahoo email address since I first got a computer in 1999. I really don't want to change it. Its a name that is linked to me specifically because its a combination of a nickname from grade school and a shortened version of my last name.

I have a friend who changes her email address when she gets too much spam. Frankly I think thats a hassle and would hate to do that.

BUT oh my lord do I get alot of crap email and as we all know, those opt out thingys don't work. Nevermind the ones I get from some stranger wanting to send me free money if only I will send a little money first. Then of course there is that time that an internet acquaintance got mad and spread my email all over the net signing up for anything and everything she could find.

I guess all I can do is either keep deleting it daily or change email address. I wish I could send a computer bomb back to the person who sends it too me. Push one button and when they open my reply, smoke would start coming from their computer, slowly and then fire would break out on their Motherboard.

There have been times in the past that I have actually played along and toyed with the boys from Nigeria, just for the fun of it, telling them I will send the money, then letting them keep contacting me back, asking where the money is, over and over again. Then one time I sent them an email telling them that I am with the CIA and my men were standing outside their office, to push their chair away from the computer etc. I'm over that, don't have the time and I don't care.

I even got one of those emails saying that the sender had been hired to kill me. I wrote back, not if I shoot you first. I literally get 30-40 a day. Yes they go to my spam box on Yahoo however, there have been times that emails from friends go to the trash or spam. When people send me emails with attachments, Yahoo sends it to my trash.

I have DSL through Bellsouth and of course I have an email through them that goes into Outlook however I just never got used to using it. I guess I could start using that one instead. I have a program that will send a bounce message out to spam sources. I think I can probably set up my Yahoo address with a reply to message so people would start using my Bellsouth address.

BUT then its only a matter of time before it becomes a problem.

Why can't they just create a spam terminator that will will melt down their motherboard when they open my reply? Why can't the service providers in Nigera do something about the idiots that literally send me so many emails a day that I have come to laugh at them.

OH, I forgot about all the offers I get for Viagra. I am female and a single female at that. One of my criteria for dates is that pharmacuticals NOT be required. BUT I get probably 10 offers a day to buy some with various bizarre claims. Then of course I get general offers for cheap meds and that they take MC and Visa.

Use the same name on Bellsouth you use on yahoo, except the end will be different.

Instead of heyitsme@yahoo.com it would be heyitsme@bellsouth.com

That will help with the transition.

Then only reply with the new address to those you want to have it. An auto reply would just move the problem.

Check about spam control at your ISP. Mine finally made it available and I've gone from a few hundred spam a day to maybe 10 on a bad day.

I'm sure I'm missing some email I want, but to be honest I haven't found it to be a problem.

Im with ya Lindsey. I was getting around 300 spam per day. After one buy one putting all those addresses in the "block email" column It dwindled down to maybe 50 a day.

I too play with the Nigerian scammers. I get maybe 25 to 35 of those a day. You can play them for a long time but the goal is to make them sit and wait for your western union money that never comes. They threaten your life when you dont send it.

Imagine a life where your only daily activity is to walk down to the library and send out millions and millions of scam letters hoping just one will bite. And bite people do. Most of us normal people know about the 411 scam but many new people come on line every day including seniors. People are falling for the 411 scam every day.

Spam slows down internet commerce and clogs peoples inbox but there is nothing we can do about it.

I do not want to change my email.

Yahoo's spam filters are simply not very good. I used a Yahoo premium account and Yahoo hosted email as my primary address until a couple of years ago. It was costing me $35/year for the service and there was still far too much spam getting through.

Since I own the domain, I kept the address and moved the account over to a hosted Gmail account. I used to see 10-12 spam messages a day that would get past Yahoo's filters. Now there's maybe 1-2 a week on the worst weeks. Most weeks, I don't see any spam at all. The best part is that the service at Google is completely free. All I pay for is the $10/year for the domain.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will change over and start using the Bellsouth address. I can send out an email to my friends and tell them to start using that address. I will keep the Yahoo address but I can set the spam and trash to empty daily.

I love upsetting the Nigerians. I kind of feel like the time they waste with me, is time they aren't taking money from someone else who is unsuspecting. I love it when they threaten me. I guess that makes me perverse but I do think its funny.

Next time, I am thinking of giving them someone's address like the police department in town, maybe give them the phone number and tell them to call and speak with the Captain there. Now that would be priceless. OR maybe someone I don't like, that would be kind of funny as well.

I'm not sure I understand your problem.

You respond to things like the Nigerian crowd and then you complain about unwanted spam ??? huh ?? You communicate with these clowns and then you're surprised that your email address gets "passed around"???

The more crap you send out, and the more crap sites you visit, the more crap you can expect to get...it really is just that simple....

If that was the CAUSE of my problem wouldn't they pass around the fact that I didn't cooperate? Anyway that was like 3 years ago.

I already thought of that. When they ask for name, address, phone # and so on, I go onto the FBI home page and look for that info of an Agent in charge. I send all this info to the Nigerian spammer. I would like to be on the other end of that phone call !!

I don't have the time to waste visiting that gallery... but thanks I guess.

In an attempt to give you some advice and help.....

Change your internet surf habits !!!

learn how to write & install, if required ,an email filter which dumps email from unknown senders DIRECTLY to the trash without ever opening it.

Don't respond or even open email unless you know the sender or are expecting something from some firm you're doing a transaction with.

As an example I'm connected nearly 24/7 and if I get 2 spams a day it's a lot...

It's very much like junk phone calls...don't give out your phone number and in a few years you'll find the annoying calls slowly cease. Same principal.
