I usually call them my "forum friends" , then for the people who are not familiar with forums, I have to explain what that means.
That is what I do. Or say "This person I know on my forum". I have met so many people from the forum I most frequent and have known them for so long that they do, indeed, feel like friends.
If I know where my internet friend is from I usually say "my friend in Florida" or something like that. Saves having to explain things! I think if I said "my internet friend", etc. to some of the people I know they would think of it as something illicit, like an internet affair or something!!!!
I usually preface the story with "I read somewhere that" or "someone told me that" when relating stories to others about things I've learned from Internet friends. The less detail shared, the better when discussing things with folks who fear or doubt the Internet.
I find myself using the term "Internet Friend" (especially with people who are not computer savy) to differentiate between people who I might see at the grocery store and people I may never meet "in person".
I either say "someone on a site im on" or I just say my friend
I call them by their real name. If I don't know their real name, I likley don't know them well enough to talk about. It sounds weird talking verbally about someone named HornyGirl6969 or something like that.

I say "forum buddies." Besides participating on this one, I have a couple of others that I moderate, and have actually met and become real friends with 6-8 local people I have met on them.
