It won't. There are a myriad of ways the Bad Guys(tm) can get an unsolicited email into your inbox. Keeping the address private will slow them down a little, but once they're successful one time, it's over. The address will be on a list that will be bought and sold over and over, until every bulk emailer has it.

"Security through obscurity" only goes so far. Technology has to do the rest. Without decent filtering, the spam WILL come. With decent filtering, it will still come, but in much smaller volumes.

I get very little spam, so it's working for me.

eevee, also regarding those emails from hotmail, I just received one this morning and if you scroll down to the bottom, there is an unsubscribe link you can click on. You might want to try that, too.

I've had a Hotmail account for 9 years. I wasn't aware there was a Hotmail related service that a person had to pay for. Mine is free.

I'm not happy with the junk either and the junk mail filters aren't user friendly. I too get a lot of Viagra and online pharmacy emails. But the ones I really hate getting are those that are for "enhancing male body parts." I'm not male. I consider my Hotmail account my junk mail account. I use my work email for daily correspondence and Hotmail when a website requires my email info.
