Another question....is there a preferred anti virus program to use with FF? Also keep in mind I don't want to slow down my computer.

That popup could be caused by a number of things. Does it happen at a specific site or are you trying to open a PDF file in the browser. You can try reinstalling IE7 and see if it fixes any corrupt files.

As far as Firefox, it's great. The new version has fixed quite a few issues. It's quick, it's stable and you can tweak it with all kinds of add on.

If you do install I recommend the following add ons:
AdBlock Plus will keep all the ads from appearing, which helps speed up browsing.
Flash Block lets you decide whether or not you want to view Flash files.
IE Tab will let you render IE specific pages in Firefox so you don't have to switch browsers.
US Dictionary Spellcheck will add a handy spellchecker.
Download Helper lets you download videos from Youtube etc.
Forecast Fox which puts a weather forecast in your status bar.

As far a specific Firefox anti virus, your system av will be sufficient. Also, using AdBlock Plus and Flash Block will keep malicious software from loading through those ads so your spyware cleaners wont have to work as hard.

some of the other add ons that I would suggest that are important and just cool to have:

Cooliris Previews - Allows you to take a look at a website without actually going to it in the window you are in.

All-in-One Sidebar - Great little tool to control themes, add ons, downloads etc.

FireGestures - allows you to draw on the website for what you want it to do. Pretty neat once you get use to it.

Speed Dial - This one is GREAT if you go to a lot of sites all the time.

FEBE

FlagFox - Ever wonder where the sites you are going to are located? This will tell you.

I think FF is faster than explorer it is a 7.8mg download so pretty small, you shouldn't have any issues with space. Most likely you do not have as great an Internet connection as you had with cable so not much you can do there. But FF should make up a little difference. Read about it here.

I prefer the free programs to the ones you pay for.
