I'm at work and my co-workers want to see a DVD of my dance competition from this past weekend. I put the DVD in the DVD spot and it doesn't play. Apparently there is no program on my computer that will let me play this. How do I get a program on my computer? I've gone to a couple of sites but they aren't really "free" - they want a credit card number and then they'll let you have a free trial.

I'm not too computer savvy, so don't make fun!!!

Thanks

Not making fun, but what kind of computer do you have? If it runs Windows, Windows Media Player should play the DVD. Are you sure it has a DVD drive, or could it possibly just be a CD drive?

Glad I could help. In the future if you're looking for a program, try download.com or tucows.com (maybe someone else has other suggestions). These sites have a lot of freeware (programs that are completely free to use) and shareware (programs that are free to download but require you to register and pay at some point). You should never have to give a credit card number to get a free trial of software, certainly not for something as common as a dvd player.

filehippo.com is another good site for freeware and the latest updates. Easy to navigate.

A DVD codec is also needed, WMP won't play a DVD movie without one
PC Hell: Free DVD Decoder Software
I'm not aware of any free ones but they may be out there.

Windows XP does not come with MPEG2 codec and/or AC3 codec for the audio so it can't play DVD's out of the box however you usually install something that will isntall the codecs for you. If not:

The best "pay for" software player for DVD IMO is Power DVD:
DVD Player Software - CyberLink PowerDVD – #1 Playback Software for DVDs and Blu-ray Discs

If you don't want to pay try VLC which will play just about anything:
VLC media player - Overview

Of course having a DVD player instead of CD player usually helps.
