Hello,
In my adventure to get Comcast out of my life (Got rid of landline phone and only have $10 basic cable until I can find the right antenna), I look towards my next goal: TO GET MY $7 A MONTH BACK

Ok, so $7 isn't a big deal. That's lunch one day. But still. Doing some google searches, I came across:

Amazon.com: Motorola SURFboard SB5101U DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem - RoHS: Electronics

It seems good, and the reviews were positive. I guess I'm just looking for one of two things:
-If anyone has experience with it *or* knows that it's a good cable modem by the specs (I don't understand that stuff /fail )
-A cheaper in price, but high in quality alternative to that.

I will stop giving you money, Comcast... one of these days...

(thanks!)

That's a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. Comcast supports DOCSIS 3.0 speeds... might as well shell out the extra $ for one. At $7 month, you'll make yo the difference quick.

Amazon.com: Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem: Electronics

I'm so glad I did this. Now I have to go learn WTH Docsis is and what the difference between 2 and 3 is.. lol

I'll keep clicking on this page for like a week and then amazon will send me an email when it's cheaper

I picked up this little puppy from Amazon....its prefect preformance no difference from the Comcast provided modem.

Amazon.com: RCA DCM425 - Cable modem - external - USB / Ethernet - 38 Mbps: Digital Media Source

and can I say I whole heartly agree with buying your own cable modem....that 7$ soon to be 10$ is insane...i was so tired of paying 200$+ cable bills...and no I dont want triple play i have no use for a house phone...

maybe I'm missing something here...
but are you saying that if you use your own modem you don't have to pay Comcast for internet access?

They charge $7/month rental on the modem just like the phone companies used to charge for phones. You still have to pay for access whether it's your modem or theirs. I had my own for like 10 years. Minus the cost of the modem I've saved about $800.

gotcha.
Time-Warner doesn't itemize for the modem separately.

That could be a ripoff. I'd call them and ask for a breakdown.

Don't buy this one. It's only DOCSIS 1.0 (according to Amazon). Comcast supports DOCSIS 3.0. If you're paying $40/month for the service, might as well get the most out of it by spending a little more on the modem.
