Question Security at WiFi Locations

Like a lot of people I am tired of shelling out $60 a month for internet service when I can go to the library and connect for free. The problem has always been security at these wifi locations, but with the popularity of wifi I am hoping that someone has come up with some decent security. I have read that there is some software or third party agents that do provide security but I wonder if it is truly secure. Suggestions please, thanks.

WiFi security is primarily based on two aspects - confidentiality and access control. Both of those are out the door when you are offering a public access point. You have no access control since its public (sort of defeats the purpose); and confidentiality is provided through encrypting the traffic using a secret key. Well, that key isn't very secret now since you need to provide it to all that wants to use the access point.

So bottom line, public access points have zero security. I would say that public Ap's are only good for general surfing - no personal business. But that's also subjective to each person. Some people would have no problems giving out their social security number over the phone at the coffee bar, while others wouldn't feel comfortable giving out their phone number.

Not a lot of security when you are connected to an open WiFi AP. Be cautious what you do online, as if you are not using an SSL/TSL connection everything is sent or received by your computer in the clear and could be captured.

A software firewall is essential to keep someone else from surfing your computer. Turn off file and print sharing, make sure all accounts on the computer have passwords.
