Is it at all possible for someone to find out who I am, if I post something on Craigslist?

I want to reveal a license plate. They were drunk driving. And not too much burns my rear end more than a drunk driver. Called the state police, and followed the guy for about 8 miles. Had to get off the highway, don't know if they caught him.

Is there any way someone could find out it was me?

I totally agree that drunk drivers should be taken off the road - even with a surface to surface missile, but what good would it do to post a license number What did the state police say ??

I don't know the laws about posting a license plate number but if it is against the law and the police were motivated enough, I would have to say yes they would be able to find you. I also wonder what good it would do. Unless you live in a very small town the odds of anyone knowing that plate are slim. Heck, I barely know what my plate number is.

By themselves? Not by the posting itself*.

Through legal channels? Yes they could.

Everything you do especially on a site like Craigslist is logged and kept for a very long time. With a site like that probably indefinitely.

*You have to keep in mind there's a lot of "gotachas", for example although I have no access to your IP here I can easily find it out. I'll keep the "how" to myself but it's easily done. An IP by itself i usually pretty useless for most people and it really depends on where it resolves to on how much more information you could get.

I don't think so..... ( please, correct me if I am wrong)
All you need to do is to give them your email when you register ( they will send you confirmation), but you do not need to give any of your "real" info when getting a new email address.. Gmail.com, usa.com, mail.com and sure many others do not require that you put your real name, address, ph# etc.
You can post the car license plate - is not copyright, and is a public knowledge.
I don't know if this will do you any good, but is doable...
... and when you post it from a public computer... I don't think that any "gotachas" will help in finding who you are...

Your email address is all they need to find you, not to mention your IP address was likely logged, even easier to find you with that.
