And they're easy to spot... These are the people whose FB profile photos are of their kids or pets. I say why bother to use any profile photo if you're going to do that? If you don't like any photos of yourself, don't post any photos.

Or perhaps they already have a life, friends, interests, and recognize the importance of protecting our privacy.

Oh wait we don't have facebook pages, to begin with.

Why is it any of your business what photo people use for their profile? I use whatever weird photos I come across for my profile. Not due to some lack of self esteem but just because I like to use 'em.

My friends and family all know what I look like anyway.

Don't take it personally. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

To me, it makes sense to use a profile photo of something other than yourself at an anonymous place like City-Data. The harder it is for people to figure out who you are here, the better. But on social networking sites, where your account has your real name and people are trying to determine if you're the Mary Smith they knew from 20 years ago when they lived in Moline, it doesn't help them recognize you when your profile photo is of your German Shepherd! If I'm looking to reconnect with Mary, I honestly couldn't care less what Mary's German Shepherd looks like... I want to see Mary!

I think that was the point.

Like cell phone obsessions and so-called "reality" TV, these kind of things always cause me to shake my head in disbelief. ie what is the appeal to all this facebook/twitter/ad nauseum stuff? Are people really that self-absorbed?
