I tried to set up a gmail address using my unusual name and was notified it's taken. I am freaked out, because I have an unscrupulus nephew who wouldn't think twice to steal my identity. I have a block on my credit bureaus, and bank accts. is there someway I can find out any info on who has this address???

Um, there is no restriction on what name you can use to sign up with gmail. Most likely someone else simply registered that name first. You might be surprised how not-rare your unusual name is.

Unless you actually see fraudulent activity on your credit cards, it is nothing to worry about.

The only way you can find out more, that I know of, would be to email that account and ask.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a somewhat unusual name and it was taken. I just put a . between the first and last name and was good to go. I was surprised by what I found googling my name.

I agree... there are not many unusual names left - remember that millions of people have gmail account by now. Add numbers or symbols to it and see if you can still use it.
Yep... google your nick... see where else is used

If you want to see how widely a username is in use, try these two searches:

User Name Check

Pipl - Username Search

Pipl will even give you some idea of what's being done with that name online.
