I've begun to notice a number of websites that have hidden pop-up ads that bypass the pop-up blocker. How they do that is when you click on anything on the webpage, it activates the pop-up as if you knowingly clicked the link, your "choice" overriding the pop-up blocker. Anyone else noticed this garbage?

Not sure if it will address the original post, but I use Ad Block Plus as an add in to Firefox. Great add in.
