Please can someone tell me if there is a way to be on Facebook yet somehow make yourself invisible so you do not show up as being online? I have a friend in another country on FB who wants to chat every time she sees me online. I don't want to spend 6 hours every single night chatting which is what she wants to do because she chats the entire time she is at work. With the time difference between countries too she wants to chat till 3am. I like her and don't want to hurt her feelings and she gets so disappointed if I abruptly say I need to go do something after just a few mins of chatting. Is there any sort of "invisible mode" in Facebook?

There are a couple of browser plugins that can make this happen. Check out How To Appear Invisible in Facebook Chat | Sizzled Core

I think you just go offline in the chat options in the bottom right of the screen. Not sure if doing this will show you as offline or not though.

Yes down in the right hand corner that says online click on that and set your status to off line
I do it all the time as I have a few friends that just don't know when to stop the idle chat
