I remember applying for Jewel Osco back when I was in high school. I was to be paid $6.00/hr, and then the union would take out, something like 15% or 20%... while I got pretty much none of the benefits of a union. I worked for a local movie theater for the same $6/hr instead with no union.
Im not sure if something changed, but I worked at Jewel for 2.5 years through High School. I got the benefits of the union. I got double time on holidays/Sundays, and time and a half on Saturdays or past 40 hours. I had the health insurance available, but never used it. I also got paid vacation and semi-annual raises (even if it was only like $.35). ALL AS PART-TIME. So, unless Jewel changed something very drastic in the years following my employment, I think your mistaken.

P.S I am not sure how much I dumped into the union per paycheck. I think per month it was like $200-$300. And I did not enjoy being a part of the union at a young age, I didn't need the benefits at the time. I ended up getting a job at Radioshack who paid me $9.50 base + commission instead of my $6.75 base. That made more sense than having health insurance (which I was under my parents), and paid vacation time or overtime. I made more at the Shack for sure, which was my only goal.

That could very well be still the case. It was like 7 years ago. I just remember a few friends taking home next to nothing, unless you were working 20 hr + per week

DIY with your stock account. You need to have margin account though. Just send in some paperwork for it.
