I have recently begun delving into this subject.
What companies are safe bet for the distant future as far as stock investments go? In other words what are the industries of the future?

I am looking at Tesla motors and each day it seems like they are a revolution. I expect to see Superchargers all across North America someday. I also expect to see a mass interest in electric vehicles. So I will probably buy some long term Tesla and Solar City stocks.

Sustainable energy is the future many claim. Wind, Hydro and especially Solar companies.

Another industry: Robotics.

What about virtual reality? The Oculus Rift is already creating a sensation in the gaming community and although the hype is extreme, it seems justifiable. VR can and will change society as we know it.

What do you say?

A very fascinating article:

This is America

Let me know your opinion

I would suggest looking into the Internet of Things (IoT). The corps to consider in this arena would be GE, Intel, Cisco, AT&T, and possibly Microsoft.

Wow, you seem to have the ability to see the future and to see not only trends but you can identify those companies who will succeed. With those abilities you should immediately buy an airline ticket and head for Las Vegas.

It seems that you have the future figured out. I suggest you round up your financial resources and invest in Tesla. If you are right, you might become a wealthy individual. If you are wrong, you will confirm my suspicions.

My opinion is that you are not delving into anything. If you want to do some delving, do some serious study instead of reading opinion articles. The guy who wrote the article you cited is not a technologist or scientist and he knows zip about either.

The question is what co.s will still be around in the future? TSLA a high flyer but priced as such. Robotics is interesting as well although any global slowdown could effect robotic co.s such as (ADEP, HOLI, ABB, IRBT etc. ), Lasers might be another thing to consider, IIVI.
Good luck!

Robotics!

The big problem is knowing who will become the major players. It could be GE or some unknown company. I read every thing I can find on robotics hoping I can get a view of the industry. Robotics is only a matter of time before it's the new industry that will make billionaires out of the investors.

Another is 3D printing. When 3D printers have been around long enough for the average home to have one I expect and explosion of interest.

As someone who works for a Fortune 100 major manufacturer and is exposed to R&D and is also exposed to the "future" of industry ...

The future is murky

Crystal ball ... wait no, more like Magic 8 ball says:

"Technology" mutual funds will continue to outperform the market in general. There's typically an explosion of tech companies before a major industrial output revolution of some sort. Then, once the market gets saturated and the creditors run out of cash, they pull back, sometimes disastrously (see the dot-com bust and the housing bust). Meanwhile, many of those tech firms also go into mineral and resource extraction (the whole fracking thing was made possible by advnces in technology). They make resources cheaper. Which further exacerbates the boom until it busts. Then humans in their infinite wisdom pile onto the old mainstays: cash, gold/silver, and oil. Boost those to new levels. Then the next tech boom hits and it starts all over again.

I'd place us at the beginning of the next industrial output; think medical tech and robotics. I see a billions of dollars industry in sex toys that look, feel, and react like porn stars. I also see a billions dollar industry in transitioning health care from "provider centric" to "patient centric" utilizing gene sequencing. 23 and Me was premature, but that model is the future.

I really believe 8 track players, cabbage patch dolls and the pet rock will be big. I am investing big and riding the wave.

I think that energy storage/batteries will be a growth/technology area. We can get power from solar, but we don't have a great efficient way to store it.

Also, hydrogen cars will be a huge growth area. There needs to be a better way to produce/extract hydrogen.

Renewable energy, vertical farming, suburban farming and other ways of growing food due to over population and global water issues and what Archan mentioned above: energy storage!

-Cheers.
