i always liked the harry brown books.

harry never believed any investment should be the be all and end all one to be concentrated on .

most portfolio's really bet the ranch on low interest rates and good times for equities and are some form of mostley stocks and bonds, usually corporate which as 2008 showed us they behave more like stocks in a crisis than the investment of choice for a crisis , treasury bonds...

so he gives you a good education on the plus and minus of all the major investments . his words have stuck in my head for more than 30 years.

Step one. The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, Andrew Tobias. Yes you can get something thicker and more academic but to start to understand it will do along with the For Dummies and Complete Idiot's Guides on the topic.

Making sure the 30th edition gets published? He was grand marshal of an LGBT parade about a decade ago.

One more thing: you may find these books at your local library. You may also find them as audio books. Personally, I like audio books for this type of subject -- you listen to it during your daily commute to work.
