Current $ value of funds : individual stocks in the overall portfolio (combine all accounts, retirement and taxable), funds including mutual funds, ETFs, what is your ratio currently? Mine is about 3:1, but the stocks has much more % gains than funds, and within much shorter time period, though I understand if it was a bear market it could be the opposite. Stocks in a few months gained more than mutual funds gained in years.

My portfolio almost is 100% in individual stocks and only a few dollars in funds (leftover funds). I prefer individual stocks over funds because:

*No fees
*Fund managers are no better than most individual investors at picking stocks
*Picking stocks is not rocket science
*You can have the same diversification as any funds. You can see what stocks a mutual funds is invested in. Pick their best ones and not pick the ones you don't like.

Individual stocks have more risks than funds and indexes. Thus the more conservative or the less time you want to put into investing the more you would lean toward funds and indexes.

individual stocks add a whole other layer of risk which is individual company risk and volatility ..

broad markets for a long term investor do not have much risk but they do have a lot of volatility .

individual companies can add risk .
