I will pull out one tiny portion for a moment though.

After SHTF and hoards of Mutant Zombie Bikers roam the earth, what is it about gold that automatically makes it barterable?

Is it that gold tastes good?

Is it that gold can be used so easily as a weapon?

During a 'Teotwawki' event, people will need food, as somewhere they must begin farming. Later they will again need to develop smelting, forging, and blacksmithing skills, for farm hand implements.

During this climb up from near-stone-age lifestyles, where exactly does gold fit in?

When faced with: "Me have spear, me want your food, me like you daughter, me take both food and daughter with me now"

Would offering gold help?

Personally I think that whiskey holds a higher barterable value than gold would.

History.

Gold has been "real money" since antiquity. A Roman Denarius is still worth whatever it's content in silver is (in theory. Numismatically its worth much more, but thats not the same thing.)

Fiat currency always goes bust at some point, along with the empire that printed it.

On a different forum, we are discussing things with a native Bosnia resident. Talking about how things were before, during and now after their civil unrest.

Gold and Silver meant nothing. They had no barter value.

Firearms and ammo did.

Canned food did.

Bleach and soap did.

And alcohol had barter value.

But not precious metals.

Firearms and ammo; canned food; bleach and soap; and alcohol.

As long as there isn't a functioning society, what good would gold and silver have?

If one is betting on that happening, then having a large stockpile of whisky
might seem to be wise, but how are you going to defend it? If you stockpile
guns to do so, are you going to be able to hold out against a siege?

Gold and silver only have value if there are surpluses of stuff and some sort of civil order.

If you are betting that civil order will break down, then you are also pretty much
betting on your own premature death. Stuff gets ugly faster than one can imagine.

In any case, this has nothing to do with the topic of this thread. The coin dealer advice
is the best advice. Another piece of advice is not to risk more than you can afford to
lose and to scale in and start small. Don't blow your whole wad in one or three buys.

Ok, I'm sure it's a dumb question. Bleach?

Notice how soap was paired with bleach. It's used to clean stuff so you can eat off it. Bleach can be used to decontaminate water. Dropping gold coins in water just doesn't have the desired effect.

Bullsheet. If someone didn't have an immediate need for any of that other stuff, then you can travel and buy your way across borders with gold and silver and not bleach. It's been that way for millennia and anyone who says different is a rube ( like the native Bosnia resident ).

Buy the ETF GLD.
If you're in LA then this place is the most reputable. Cash For Gold | Numismatics | Foreign Exchange | Estate Jewelry | Wilshire Coin - Santa Monica CA - Welcome
They will also pay full spot price when it comes time to sell.
