Some semesters ago, one of our teachers showed us a study regarding the costs of children. From the time a kid is born to the time he/she reaches 18, the cost for raising a child will be approximately $240,000.
On a yearly basis, this means roughly $13,300 and on a monthly basis, $1100 (rounded for simplicity).
Having kids is necessary, as we need to keep our lineage continuing. However, we must also factor the costs involved with having children, for if this is not carefully done, the children and parents become a liability to each other.
Having kids is a choice not a requirement. In the short and long run, is it worth it? It changes your lifestyle dramtically. The world is already populated.

My kids are my greatest pride and joy, expenses notwithstanding. And I have never made more than $55K in my life. Wife has rarely worked.
If a person doesn't instinctively feel the rewards that will come with raising children, and give money and better lifestyle a higher priority, then I feel sorry for them. Are they missing some gene or is it simply gross selfishness?
What if *their* parents had thought of them as nothing but a simple economic burden??
And the "world is overpopulated" slogan is nonsense, and just an excuse.
The world is actually quite *underpopulated* with intelligent and creative people... because those are the ones not having children. The unintelligent, uncreative, and lazy are quite busy populating the world with more of same.

Surely someone has a "Liability War Story" (car accident, assault, rehab). Keep your Umbrella Insurance paid til they are over 25, EVEN if they have left home and are living on their own. (so advised my attorney and insurance guy)
I consider myself very fortunate, my youngest is 25 1/2. whew ...
Now to improve my own driving !
