If you're looking into Grinnell, you'd probably be interested in its history. In 1882 there was a terrible tornado that took many lives there...very sad...but interesting to note that at that time Grinnell and other nearby towns were what was 'happening' in Iowa!! They say that they called nearby Malcom 'Little Chicago' at that time, and both towns then had booming businesses, hotels, restaurants, etc.!!!

Grinnell is a nice little town. I don't live in Grinnell but I do most of my shopping there. They have a Super Wal-Mart lots of fast food restaurants and a great hospital. The college is on the North side of town on Hwy. 6 with very easy access. I think you will enjoy it there.

I think since you are only in CR, you should come give modern Grinnell a look-over. It's very industrial! There are 10+ factories in town, and a fairly large industrial park a mile from the interstate!
My girlfriend works at the hospital. It is pretty modern and handled well for a small hospital. It has a motto: the biggest rural hospital", or words close to that affect.
I have lived here all my life, and although a large city it is not...it has definately been growing in the last 5-10 years (we finally got our Supercenter last year! lol).

I was definitely 'sold' on the area as it is near the interstate and not that far from Des Moines, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids....but now I'm wondering if I will run into a problem with holding events outdoors in summer and whether people in the surrounding cities think of the town as farming and nothing else? I live in one of the biggest cities in the south eastern US...so I know how to market a 'retreat' sort of business, I just don't know if there are too many pre-conceived ideas with which to contend.

Any advice?
I think it would be a great idea to open/establish a B & B near Malcom, Iowa. There is already one B & B outside of Malcom out in the country and more than one would be Great too. We hosted my parents 50th Anniversary there in this Redone Barn with all kinds of foods served there. It was an Awesome Day! I think it would go over well in/around Malcom....since you would be close to the interstate....

I love Grinnell myself. When I lived there in the mid 80's I thought that the area had a lot of industry for an area its size. The College is a great school. I am more of a football fan myself, and they don't have a team. Not sure how everyone is doing now for work or fun. I thought that the people in Grinnell were very nice.
