Thought I'd post the 2010 CNN/Money Best Places to Live rankings, since Ames was ranked #9:
Best Places to Live 2010 - from Money Magazine

They rank the best small cities every year. I'm not sure what the population cut -off is, but it appears that the largest cities on the list have populations of about 200,000.

Iowa City and West Des Moines also made the list, at #68 and #75, respectively.

Other Iowan cities in the rankings:
Dubuque and Ames were ranked the #6 and #7 shortest commutes.

Des Moines and Cedar Rapids were ranked the #10 and #11 most affordable cities.

Johnson County (Iowa City) was ranked #24 in job growth.

So, what do we think? Is Ames really the best city in Iowa? I find the description of a "bustling shopping district" a bit misleading, myself. Not to say that Ames isn't nice, but I just don't think it's a better place to live than many other cities in Iowa.

Nonetheless, congratulations to the cities that made the cut! Nice to see so many Iowan cities getting recognition lately. You can hardly find a list without an Iowan city on it these days.

Don't hate on ames, ames is a very smart city, they seperated the city from the college and this caused for the high ranking. They didn't try to fool anyone by merging the college with the city or build a college around a village and then naming it ames. therefore go ames and continue to keep it real.
