I need help! My husband has been offered a job in Mason City, Iowa and we need to know what we're getting into before he accepts it. I have done alot of research and I have a few questions. How cold and hot does it Really get throughout the year? Why is the property crime so high but the violent crime is next to nothing, will I have to worry about being robbed every night? Is there a bad side of the city? Is it a good place to finish raising my 15 year old son? Thank-You in advance!

In the winter time, it can get very cold in Mason City. Count on having at least one full week where daytime highs do not get above zero (with bitterly cold winds to boot). Average high temperatures in Jan-Feb are probably around 15 degrees or so. It does not get particularly 'hot' in the summer. It's not unusual to get up to 90 degrees or so in July/August - but I'd say more average summer high temps are around 80. It is humid in the summer, but no where near the humidity you would experience in the southeastern US.

Most will tell you the north side of Mason City is the bad side - but I don't think any area of Mason City is 'unsafe' - its just the north side has a higher concentration of cruddy looking homes and more riff-raff.

I suspect property crime is high because Mason City is really the retail/dining/entertainment hub of sorts for at least a 40 mile radius. And with that, alot of teenagers from the surrounding areas come into Mason City for their 'fun' on the weekends. And where there are teenagers, usually property crimes follow. Mason City is really a very safe community overall.

I would be fine with raising my own children in Mason City. It has good schools, and it's a safe & involved community. Although, my first choice to live and/or send my children to school in that area would be Clear Lake.

TY for the info, I have a few other questions. Is there any gang activity? How is the drug problem there? It sounds like the teenagers get in alot of trouble, do I have to worry about my 15 year old? Also Why Clear Lake, is it a better city? Thanks Again to anyone who replies.

Clear Lake is smaller, more expensive to live in so you're going to limit some issues due to that .

I lived in Mason City in the late 90's and never felt unsafe.
