It does have a Rust Belt feel from what I hear, but it can turn around for the better. Crime rate, though high for Iowa standards, is not the worst, not even the worst for Iowa. Waterloo can start by attracting new businesses to the area.

It is amazing what people think of Waterloo because of first impressions. I am from Waterloo and attend the University of Iowa in Iowa City. I always was asked questions about gangs and crime. In all honesty, I have never witnessed that, I grew up on the nicer side of Waterloo, and was never surrounded by that. There is a lot of diversity, but in a way I feel like many other Iowans (especially from smaller towns) are very ignorant with the societal issues of today. I feel fortunate to have grown up in such a diverse city because I know how to treat people with whatever they bring to the table.

Very good. There are worse cities than Waterloo. Waterloo has its share of crime, but there is smaller places with more violence. I think waterloo gets hated on for a combination of reasons. One of them a race issue. The other reasons being the economy.

I noticed a lot of negative info about Waterloo, too. It's really not that bad people! I never feared for my life or anything and I lived in the area for 8 years. I even dated a guy who lived in the "ghetto" and it's not that bad. If you go out looking for trouble you will find it. If not YOU WILL BE FINE. This is Iowa people, even the most run down places are NOTHING compared to large cities.

There is an office located downtown Waterloo called the Waterloo Convention and Visitors Bureau and they have a very helpful website (Welcome to Waterloo Iowa Conventions & Visitors Bureau). It has a list of restaurants, attractions, things to do, places to stay, etc. Also, if you call the office, they are very willing to make sure you have plenty to do.
Things to do include:
Bowling
Golfing on 4 golf courses
Unique restaurants such as Galleria de Paco (features Paco Rosic's rendition of the Sistine Chapel on the ceiling. He used Krylon spray paint for the whole project. It is sooooo neat), Cu, Jameson's Irish Pub, Monica's Piano Bar, D&K Hickory House, and many more.
The Grout Museum District
Nearly 80 miles of paved trails (very nice)
Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum
Black Hawk Hockey (Young Arena)
Bucks Baseball (Riverfront Stadium)
Lost Island Water Park
Isle Casino and Hotel at Waterloo
Tours of the John Deere Facilities (Very neat, I just went on one this week)
Currently, Waterloo is in the process of building a river walk downtown and a nice amphitheater area for events. This should be completed summer 2008.
The Waterloo Convention and Visitors Bureau also publishes a quarterly calendar of events that is pretty extensive and there are events going on every weekend and some throughout the week.
Thanks for reading this long post---I just wanted to make sure that people know that there are things to do in Waterloo--please check out the website and call if you have any questions!!
