Might be moving to the area and I was wondering what fun things there are to do in either city (Ames or Des Moines). I would love to hear your experiences!

I don't live in Des Moines, but when we happen to be in town for a bit, highlights include the Des Moines Downtown Farmer's Market and hitting the trails along Saylorville Lake.

Sorry for not being specific. I was just curious overall. But personally I enjoy: shopping (men's clothes, guns, electronics), target shooting, seeing nature trails, and sporting events (football, basketball, and baseball).

@1stpontiac I will have to check those trails out for sure. Thanks for the suggestion!

Are there any good lakes for boating in the area?

For target shooting there's Butch Olafson range near Polk City, a range at Van Meter and then Banner Pits about halfway between Des Moines and Indianola. I guess there's also an indoor range somewhere just south of Ankeny, but I don't know much about it.

Like what 1stPontiac said, the trails around Saylorville are nice. There are some good bike trails in the city too if you're into that. East of Ames near Boone is Ledges State Park which is a nice place to go walk around.
