I see lots of stuff on bird hunting in the area --- what's the best way to find out where the public land is to do some recreational shooting? Like plinking, not hunting.
Thanks!

There is a range at Spring Run, about three miles east of Spirit Lake on 9. There is (or was a few years ago) another southwest of Milford by about 2 miles but I can't remember which turnoff. There is another about 4 or 5 miles west of Spencer on the Ocheyedan River but that's a half hour drive from Spirit Lake.

Otherwise, throw an ad in the paper and see if you can trade something (labor even?) to a local farmer for use of his land for shooting. A lot of them have makeshift ranges set up for their own use anyway and would be more than happy to have a responsible local resident watching their land while they're elsewhere working fields. I had a similar arrangement years back and the only caveat was that I promised to shoot any coyotes that I spotted, and I happily obliged.

I'm just visiting the area so not sure if a labor trade would work. I'll ask around once I'm there.

Well, the three I listed are all public ranges. Spring Run is the closest one that I'm aware of, depending on where exactly you'll be staying.

Found the Spring Run range and it was neat! Very pretty area and a nice place to shoot.

Here's a google maps link for other people wondering how to find it: linky.
