Hotel Roosevelt - Cedar Rapids
Would any of you living in Iowa happen to know if Hotel Roosevelt is still located in Cedar Rapids? I can't find anything on the web about it. If it isn't there, do you know when it closed or changed to another name?
Thanks so much for your help!!

Still There...
The Roosevelt Hotel is still here. It is no longer a hotel, but is apartments with an emphasis on serving the elderly and disabled. The ground floor holds CR Chop House, a good restaurant. There was a murder there (in the rooms, not the restaurant) earlier this year, and it seems like someone jumps or falls out of a window to their death every couple of years. Despite its status on the National Registry of Historic Places, there has been discussion about leveling the Roosevelt in order to expand the city's big auditorium/concert venue, but no plans as yet. It's still called "The Roosevelt."

That's disappointing, downtown needs a good hotel. Just hope the city doesn't do something stupid and level it.

Hotel Roosevelt
The poster who said the jumping and deaths every couple of years was really exaggerating, that isn't true. I think they are getting confused with Geneva Tower on 5th Ave SE. They have mostly elderly and disabled tenants, not the Roosevelt. They are right about the murder tho that happened earlier this year, but hey that could have happened anywhere. I doubt they will level it to expand the US Cellular center, that would take too much money and the city doesn't have it at the moment.

Here's an excerpt from an article from 1992: "June 28: Renovations to the 12-story Roosevelt Hotel neared the 50 percent completion mark as owners worked to convert the hotel into a senior living facility."
Here's the story on the change to "all ages":
Downtown C.R. landmark to house more apartments
The Gazette (Cedar Rapids-Iowa City) January 22, 1997
Author: Douglas Neumann; Gazette staff writer
Renovations already under way will transform the former Roosevelt Hotel into a commercial and residential complex with almost 100 efficiency, one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The Roosevelt isn't primary residence for seniors or disabled. I toured the apartments there last year acutally. They're cute, small, but unique. They combined x hotels rooms to create an apartment, be that a 1 or 2 bedroom.
The Chop House is hit or miss for food. It's nice for drinks though.

I remember that for years the 1st - 9th floors were hotel rooms and the 10th - 12th floors were apartments. In the early 90's is when they started moving ahead with the remodeling into apartments.
I had more fun in that place than anybody had a right to. One of my funniest memories of The Roosevelt was standing on the top of the parkade and throwing a couple golfballs at the skywalk across 1st Ave while a security guard was walking thru and watching him hit the deck like he was getting fired at. Oh, to be a teenager again.

That is what I miss about Ceder Rapids, The sky walks. Those are so cool. Was so nice to walk around there. Do they still have little shop areas in some of them? Isnt there a really nice hotel downtown that has a major concert venue attatched to it?
