mrfrekes... you should stop generalizing people in one area, it is NOT what the website is for.
Why do you care so much about something one person said? Not everyone in West Des Moines shops at wal-mart, obviously, so why are you wasting your life on such petty comments. You talk about these DSM people making themselves look stupid but look at you talking about them 24/7... get a life bud! |

Yes ferkes, DM and Walmart, and where did you say you were from? CR? or Rockwell City?
Hmmm.... as I recall, CR has basically one mall and their only other one is on life support. Rockwell City, I have no idea how many people live there. Mall? Doubtful. I don't think you have a lot of room to criticize DM's shopping options. It is kind of like Rosie O'Donnell criticizing Jennifer Aniston's looks. |

By the way, I wasn't criticizing Des Moines for not having an IKEA. Many great cities around the country also don't have an IKEA. I was merely pointing out that the likelihood of an area like Des Moines landing such a store is virtually nil. This notion that Des Moines has the same type of demographics as Chicago or Minneapolis is stretching credibility. If reality offends you, I'm deeply sorry. |

No one was offended, but you act like everyone is walmart trash there which i'm almost positive isn't the case, maybe you can prove us all wrong on that tho? Where are you even from that you want to critisize Des Moines so much???

I don't need "to tell mommy" anything, this is a forum where people can express opinions contrary to yours. Des Moines will never land an IKEA store, that is just reality. If this angers you, perhaps your energy would be better directed towards the decision-makers with that company.
Saying that Des Moines is not a likely candidate for IKEA's next round of expanison is not a criticism. It's a statement of the obvious. |

In many ways I'm on the fence about this one. I grew up just outside of Sioux Falls and have lived in Urbandale, just outside of DSM for the last 20 or so years. After this long, DSM is home and I have no plans to move to SF or anywhere else. That said, Sioux Falls has made some remarkable changes since I lived there. I don't know what DSM was like pre-1980's but SF has come a long way. Back in the day, one could go days without seeing someone who was anything other than white or occasionally a Native American. The African American population has since multiplied and of course the Hispanic population has too. Overall, I go back at least a couple of times each year and SF's growth is significant. Housing is comparable both in variety and in cost. SF is a bit colder with more below 0 days but after a certain point cold is well, just cold. The wind is constant up there though, making it feel colder. I prefer the terrain around DSM. SF is flat, flat, flat while around here there are more wooded areas and rolling hills. There seems to be a much greater percentage of elderly in the SF area too as compared to DSM but perhaps thats just my perception. Overall, both are nice cities if a small midwestern city is what you're looking for. If you're looking for something else, neither will make you happy.
