Des Moines Metro is much larger and more urban like than Sioux Falls, so its hard to compare. If you compare Sioux Falls it would be more comparable to Cedar Rapids or Rochester, MN.

I voted Des Moines, and I've been to both. Sioux Falls is a nice place to live, and is growing very quickly, but Des Moines is much more established, and in my opinion, has a lot more things to do. Also, Des Moines' metro is much larger and more mature, with several large suburbs that have important business communities in their own right. Des Moines wins hands-down.
I think a more valid comparison would be Des Moines vs. Madison, WI. |

Yeah, nothing really to compare. Big town or small town would be the only question.

Des Moines is the center of the universe, don't you know?!?! There isn't another city that can hold a candle to it anywhere. They have more insurance buildings than Sioux Falls. They have more malls, too! Why isn't everybody in the world moving to Des Moines? Are they stupid?

Des Moines vs Sioux Falls = splitting hairs
Des Moines vs Tokyo = splitting hairs Des Moines vs North Platte = splitting hairs Wonder what kool-aid drinker's logic this is?? BTW, the DM vs Omaha thread is a pretty good one. Even I gave Omaha the edge (living in reality is a good thing). DM/Omaha makes for some lively discussions because we have many areas of similarity (buildings, arenas, sports, restaurants, etc). But DM vs what is that town you like so much? Not even close. |

I've lived in many different towns, and can find positives and negatives to living in any of them. When I lived in Chicago, most people thought the world ended at the western edge of DuPage and McHenry counties. When I lived near the Fort Dodge area, people thought Des Moines was a huge metropolis like NYC or LA. When you live in just one area your whole life, you tend to marginalize the rest of the world. It seems every Des Moines person I've encountered here does the exact same thing.

lol this is funny.
Sioux Falls at least doesn't have the ridiculous tax structure found in Iowa. The only true advantage DSM has is that it's closer to Chicago, Minneapolis, KC, and St. Louis. The same quality of life can be found in both, except Sioux Falls is probably a little safer because it's smaller. Neither towns are really expensive except I doubt Sioux Falls is trying to push million-dollar condos in its downtown core to pretend it's a big city. Another thing DSM does WAY too much is they will find some article by some unknown magazine ranking them as the "best place to eat popcorn" or something ridiculous like that and actually use it as a selling point. Des Moines is truly the real Narn, IA. |
