I'm coming a little late to the party, but I get what mayhem is trying to say... having grown up about an hr NW of Dubuque on the Mississippi, I'm familiar with the area.... growing up, going to Dubuque on the random occasion was a treat! If that doesn't give you a hint of what there is to do in rural NE Iowa, I don't know what will!

Regarding the post on Iowa City to Dubuque, it's all relative.... Dubuque is a slower, more laid back kind of city and Iowa City is more hustle and bustle (relatively speaking). I'm not sure I'd categorize myself as a fast and furious kind of person, I like to stop and smell the roses once in a while. Des Moines offers plenty to keep myself entertained as well as a fair amount of "small-town" feel to allow me to smell the roses.

Bottom line, there's not a lot to do in rural Iowa. That includes Dubuque, in my opinion. If I didn't have family there, I probably wouldn't visit Dubuque with any sort of regularity at all. A lot of people from Dubuque think Des Moines is "big city".... one more hint as to what there is (or is not) in NE Iowa.

West end isn't that bad. I live in Asbury and bought my house under $200,000. You are right about the downtown. East Dubuque is a nice cheap place to live.

Uhhh. Apparently, you don't read the news much:

Amtrak Service to Dubuque Chugging Along | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weather | Local News

Try again. This time don't "lmfao."

Good luck. The train's coming!

News is full of crap. That is why I don't read it. If they build it and it's fully functional pm me your phone number and I'll personally call you up and apologize for being wrong.
