Hi
I will be starting a new job in West Des Moines(moving from Montreal Canada) . Will be grateful if some one can guide about the residential areas that are closer to the following address(since at present I do not have a Car, I have to commute using public transit or walk during inital phase) 6000 Westown Parkway West Des Moines Also are there any websites that can be of help for apartment/room search , presently I am just using craigslist.org but have not been able to find much for West Des Moines. Thanks a million for your time. Regards Rocky |

You are REALLY going to need a car in Iowa. Really.
That being said, at least there is a grocery store and other necessities in that immediate area. Try apartments.com, which is what the Des Moines Register links to. The closest neighborhoods are Clive and West Des Moines, but the address you specify is in the middle of a large commercial area and a lot of busy traffic. Here's the site for the bus system: Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority |

Sun Prairie Apartments are very close to the 6000 block of Westown Parkway.
Sun Prairie Apartments Never been in them, but they look nice from the outside. I know there are a few smaller apartment buildings around that area too - I work 10 blocks east of where you are going to be working. If I think of it, I'll take a look and write down some of the smaller places for you. The vicinity has alot of sprawling office campuses, so not having a car will be tough. I do know that Sun Prairie apartments is easily walkable to your work address, but the shopping and restaruants in the area are a healthy walk from Sun Prairie... City buses do run in that area. You'll probably find their hours of operation and frequency of stops in the area disappointing... |

Tons of apartments within walking distance. Not sure how nice they are.
Bus routes run right past on Westown and start in downtown Des Moines. See this page Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority • Bus Schedules / Route Maps and look at Express routes: Westown Express. Also look at Vista Express as it shows the curve from Prairie View to Vista. There is more residential in the area than earlier posters led you to believe. It's south of Westown over the Interstate. That's also where the apartments are. The stretch from about Ashworth Road and Prairie View (essentially 53rd and Ashworth) all the way around to about 66th and Vista, which is what Prairie View turns into (it curves around the Interstate). My best advice would be to look at a map of WDM on Google Maps so you can see what I'm saying. |

From what I remember, Sun Prairie Apartments were a little sketchy, but not that bad. It's a pretty big complex, so I'm sure you'll find a little bit of everything. I second that you're going to need a car. |
