I just drove through Bloomfield yesterday, and oh my gosh, the Davis County Courthouse is one of the most beautiful courthouses I've ever seen!

An added bonus was seeing a camel grazing in nearby Cantrill.

What are some of your favorite courthouses in Iowa? The one in Tipton (Cedar Co.) is just depressing:

If you go down the road a bit, the Van Buren County courthouse is the oldest courthouse in Iowa that's still in use.

The Dallas County Courthouse is pretty cool. I had to go for jury duty once when I lived in western West Des Moines (pretty much Waukee). The courtroom I was in was in one of the upper rooms with the round window. It was very neat inside too.

Thankfully they settled out of court and I didn't have to sit on a jury though!

Actually, the North Lee County Courthouse in Fort Madison is Iowa's oldest courthouse still in use. Construction was started in 1841 and completed in 1842; construction on the Van Buren County Courthouse started in 1840, but wasn't finished until 1843.

However, the North Lee County courthouse was gutted by fire in 1911 and court was held elsewhere until repairs were completed . Van Buren officials jumped on this fact to proclaim their courthouse the oldest in the state in CONTINUOUS use. And second oldest in the nation, by the way.

North Lee County Courthouse, Fort Madison:

Lee County is longer than most counties due to the fact that it's located in the bootheel of Southeast Iowa. Because of that it has had two separate county seats since 1847 in order to reduce travel time for residents back in the horse and buggy days. The current South Lee County Courthouse is housed in the old post office/Federal building:

Wow, cool old buildings. Just think how much it would cost to recreate one of these structures today. All they know today is how to make vertical ice cube tray buildings. The courthouse in Clarinda Iowa is pretty. There is a pic on the link. The second link is the Sioux County courthouse, I think its neat too. On that website they show photos of 40 courthouses across Iowa. Its interesting to read a bit about the buildings.

Sioux County Courthouse (Orange City, Iowa) | Iowa Backroads

I like this one, and Sioux County's the best. From all on the website that shows the courthouses. Which one is your favorite?

Jefferson County Courthouse (Fairfield, Iowa) | Iowa Backroads

On that same Iowa backroads link they have photos of the movie theatres across the state, interesting to see them.
