I am a life-long Iowa City resident, and everything posted above is pretty accurate. If you want to see any pictures I can upload them to show you some of downtown IC and surrounding areas. Its a great place to live and if weren't for the lack of mountains I would never leave.

These were all taken early in the morning on a Sunday during the summer. It's normally VERY busy downtown with pedestrian traffic (and a lot of busses and cars). This was just during the 2 weeks between spring and summer session, and most people weren't up on a Sunday morning that early downtown.

Amazing pictures! Iowa City definitely has a strong urban flavor for being a medium sized town.

I thought the architecture was quite nice in Iowa City.

When I was there on a Saturday night this summer, there were a lot of sketchy characters on the downtown mall. I suppose that's no different than say, Charlottesville (also witnessed the same phenomenon there).

Iowa City remind me of State College, but with much smaller hills. Neither is, nor feels, as urban as Ann Arbor, Madison, Evanston, or even Champaign.

It's definitely a vibrant place, partially because of all the students, but the town does have an "urban" feel not found anywhere else in the state, the nightlife there is very active, lots of people from other places in the country (mainly because of the campus), very tolerant, and the people are simply more outgoing than other places in the state.

We call the "sketchy characters" in the ped mall the "Ped Rats". They are harmless, just have nothing better to do than loiter around the ped mall and panhandle.

Some areas of Iowa City are very green. Plenty of parks. It depends where you are. Surely the campus and downtown are pretty, pedestrian oriented, but there are plenty of areas of Iowa City that I find quite ugly... described in words such as dirty, gritty, concrete, polluted (so many cars, parking lots) and industrial.

I go to the ped mall regularly but haven't ever noticed any sketchy characters. Even the chronically homeless seem polite... they call me "Sir".
