What is the best town on the Mississippi River? Someplace not too big but not TOO far a way from a decent hospital, basic shopping?

thats a toss up, some places have very nice areas and then half a mile away you are in a ****hole. That being said I don't mind Keokuk. Pretty small at under 15000 but has a decent health care and shopping area. A lot of nice houses on the bluffs.

I thought Dubuque was great! Very scenic and there are a lot of hospitals, shopping, historic areas. The economy is also doing great so you should easily find a job there.

You're being a little vague, since I've seen "basic shopping" interpreted so many ways on this forum... But here are a few nice towns to consider. I know you're asking in the Iowa forum, but I tried to include all sides of the river.
Nice "bigger" cities:
Dubuque, IA
La Crosse, WI
Quincy, IL
Clinton, IA
Nice "smaller" cities:
Marquette/McGregor, IA/ Prairie du Chien, WI
Gutenberg, IA

In Iowa, I would go for Dubuque. Davenport is nice, and larger, but it is rougher around the edges. Gutenburg has a small college, right? I remeber it as a nice town. There are plenty of towns on the Upper Mississippi, though. If you aren't locked to Iowa (not to dissuade you, Iowa is the second best state on the river ), La Crosse, Wisc. and Winona, Minn. are great cities. Quincy is OK, Hannibal would be nice if there was any money left in the place.
