Yeah, sorry. I should have made that more clear. I meant buildings comparable to the Principle Building or the Ruan Center.

You've got a point. I count EMC as the last high-rise built downtown, and that was in 1997.
I think the current situation (if that's what you'd call it), of building mid-rises over a larger land area is not at all bad. It expands the downtown area, and creates some nice uniformity and density. All the renovation of older buildings is very good to see as well. Tall buildings are great, but I don't think they're the only measure of the health of downtown Des Moines.

Am wondering if maybe it is because the City of Des Moines does not keep up with other states as far as services go. DHS is a total failure and has been for many years. Courts and judges do not help, but hinder our children in need. Socical Services are many, but few actually work. We need a complete overhauling of government!

Obviously the education system needs overhauling too if you catch my not so subtle dig.
The City government has nothing to do with state social services like DHS or the court system and judges.

...or anything to do with a mass exodus of people from the Des Moines area.

Well it seems like West Des Moines and all of the west and north suburbs are still growing.
But what about the southside? It seems like there's hardly and development moving towards the south bypass. Which still feels like a rural highway it's so far from the city.
