Does anyone know anybody that commutes from Iowa City to Davenport? At only 53.6 miles (50 minutes) from Coral Ridge Mall to the Wood Intermediate School area in Davenport, does it seem like to far of a drive to work if their is a good enough job, 50+ miles to and from work is pretty common in larger cities so why wouldn't it work in Iowa?

I know of people who take an employer commuter van from Davenport to the University of Iowa on a daily basis. I guess it's possible. Traffic wouldn't seem to be a problem, just straight driving on Interstate 80, if you don't mind gas expense and car wear. A co-worker used to drive from Mount Pleasant to IC for a couple of years before moving closer.

People do it, but it gets tiresome. If you're used to long drives you should be fine, but most people in Iowa are not used to such long commutes so that's probably why more people don't do it. Other than car wear and gas, the biggest issue might be during the winter -- there will be days when the snow makes I80 pretty treacherous, so make sure you have an option to work from home if things are really bad out.

I went to U of Iowa 40+ years ago for my undergraduate degree, and my family lived in Rock Island, IL. It's not a bad drive at all ... as long as you're not dealing with a major snowstorm or ice storm. The drive gets pretty boring after the first 50 times or so, however, so bring music. I've done longer commutes than that to consulting gigs in the Chicago area.
