My husband accepted a job in Davenport several months ago. Now that our " nest is empty" , I will be joining him in the next couple of months. I work in health care and will be looking for work with some of the area hospitals. I was looking for honest opinions of living in the area. Most of the threads I have found are several years old and was looking for more current opinions. I have visited a couple of times and did like it. Just wanted to hear some advice from locals. Thank you!!

I was recently in Davenport earlier this year, and it has changed from 5 years, Downtown Davenport has been popping up with condos and apartment buildings which has changed the opinion of downtown being "unsafe".. Both Davenport and Moline's downtowns have been undergoing major revitalization over the past few years. So if you're looking for urban living I'd check out these downtown areas, or, if you're looking for suburban living Eldridge, Bettendorf, LeClaire are your best bet on the Iowa side. On the Illinois side Silvis, East Moline and some parts of Moline are really nice but the Iowa side in my opinion is much better. Check out the news station and papers to also help you choose a nice place to live, the sometimes feature festivals/activities that maybe to your liking.

As a lifelong member of eastern Iowa, Davenport is definitely the cheaper place to live in the Quad City area. However, it is pretty crime-ridden. My wife and I just signed a lease in Bettendorf and my wife is is in the healthcare profession as well(pharmacist). She recently took a job in Clinton and starts in a few weeks. If you would like to know anymore, just let me know and I will try to assist in any way I can.

We live about 50 miles from Davenport however, we go there often. To me it is easy to get around and find things, good shopping, good restaurants (try Harlans, excellent chicken), easy access to I80 and you can head toward the Amanas and Williamsburg easily. Also an easy drive into Muscatine if you want a smaller area, not as much shopping but good restaurants there as well, I have 4 favorites just in Muscatine. Davenport also has The Machine Shed and a Cracker Barrel or you can go up I80 and have a good meal at the Iowa 80 Truck Stop. Not far from Illinois either so you can go there if you want to do some shopping, Jumer's (casino/hotel) is not far and they have an excellent buffet, have you guessed yet we don't gamble but we love food....LOL

I wouldn't call Davenport "crime-ridden". Some parts aren't that great but most of it is safe. The City-Data link shows Davenport in the high-average range and the crime rate has been dropping since 2004. I doubt it's gone up in the last two years.

I have no qualms about going anywhere in Davenport, but all of the blue areas (linked below) are fine places to live. My girlfriend and I are buying a house in the E. Central Park Ave/Brady st neighborhood. It's ranked 10th, but it's a nice neighborhood close to the Duck Creek bike trail.

As mentioned earlier, I think Davenport is changing for the better. Downtown is getting better and attracting more residents. The Village of East Davenport is a nice dining/shopping/nightlife area. I see a pretty age-diverse crowd whenever I go down there late at night.

I've lived in Bettendorf for a while and like it, but there's not a lot of excitement here. Azteca is a good Mexican restaurant and I love Jimmy's Pancake House, but the other dining options are fairly sparse. Most of the stuff to do on the Iowa side is in Davenport. I like Bettendorf's parks, especially Leach Park down by the river. Davenport seems to have more park space. VanderVeere Park, in the center of the city, is beautiful.

Downtown Moline is pretty nice. They have some good restaurants and the Mark of the Quad Cities (it's the I-Wireless Center now but I refuse to call it that). There are some good restaurants and theater stuff in downtown Rock Island, but I'm not a big fan of the bar scene there. They also recently built a riverfront park in Rock Island that's really nice. There are some great views downtown Davenport from there and you can park and use the riverfront bike path. The Quad Cities is trying to better connect their bike paths and make the cities more bike-friendly, which I appreciate as a runner/cyclist.

I've lived here off and on since '98, so I'm a little biased, but I like it.

Will be working on a temporary assignment in Davenport -- living initially in a motel/hotel. Are there any Residence Inn/Extended Stay type places? Any reasonably priced hotels perhaps off the beaten track that might be nice?
Don't need luxury, just clean and safe.

What are chances of getting a small apartment without a lease if I find I'll need to be there 6 months or more?

Thanks,

There's a Staybridge suites Extended Stay on Utica Ridge Road in Davenport. I've only stayed at the Radisson in Moline, but I imagine the Staybridge is nice. The surrounding neighborhood is top-notch.

I don't know about renting without a lease, but I'm sure there are apartment complexes that will rent month to month. My friend lived month to month for a while at Windsor Crest Apartments and they seemed pretty decent. I think the new Moline Enterprise lofts (downtown Moline) do various lengths of leases.
