It's smack-dab in the middle of Flyover Country.

I think it might depend on which part of the state you come from.

My favorite Iowa sandwich is the pork tenderloin. Much better than anything Five Guys has on their menu.

Meh...we have them here and you are not missing anything. They are overpriced, medicore at best, hamburgers. And they are soooo slow there. It took the better part of 15 minutes to wait for my burger after I placed my order. There are far better places to get a hamburger.

In Davenport we always called them maid-rites even when making them at home.
I had never heard of "loose meat sandwiches" until they called them that on an episode of 'Roseanne'.
Never heard of a 'tavern sandwich' until this thread.
I'm really not a fan of maid-rites.

5 Guys is good but not so different than any other burger I've ever had.

Mmmmmmmmmmm.... As a former Iowan, I really miss the Maid-Rite. I used to work next door to a Maid-Rite restaurant, which was only a block from my old high school. I was raised on Maid-Rites.
