I have heard that Ledges State Park near Madrid is very nice, especially in the fall, for hiking and whatnot.
Anyone here visit it? Any thoughts or tips on which trails to take to get the best views?

It's beautiful. I don't know it well enough to recommend anything, but you'll definitely enjoy it. Very underrated area.

Well, we will see. HAHA

I am not really outdoorsy, but someone who is visiting next month is. They are really into nature and hiking, etc. Me? I'd rather sit in the sun with a drink. But, since I know it is something they would enjoy I suggested we check it out.

Because I am not big into hiking I am hoping someone can give me some tips on what specific area to visit as I will not be hiking the entire 13 miles or whatever it is! LOL

It's ok. There are trees and you climb up some steps.

For a state park, it is pretty weak.

Then again, it is Iowa......for Iowa.....it is pretty nice (then again, these people think fast food is fancy).

Checked out this park on Friday. It was a nice day. We took a picnic and then explored the trails up and down the bluff. Pretty nice! We are thinking about going back next month when the leaves are all changing.

It is a nice, easy drive from the Des Moines metro.

A few pictures I took:

Thanks for sharing the photos! I'll bet that it will be beautiful when the leaves start turning. I've added it
to my travel list, as well.

Elle,
You wrote about perhaps going back to the Ledges next month given that you enjoyed the park & it's beauty. We regularly visited it as a family when I was young & while I attended nearby ISU & enjoyed the park immensely.
I have yet another park suggestion for you to visit when you can. It is Springbrook State park over in beautiful Guthrie County.
Our family first visited it when I was a young high school student & we were floored by the gorgeous scenery not only in the park but what we saw as we traveled south into Guthrie County to reach it.
i haven't been there for around 40 yeras so I do not know what changes have occurred in the area but Guthrie County's varied & hilly topography really was enchanting.

I'll look into that one! How far is it from Des Moines?

Edit: I Googled it. It is about an hour from me. That might be a little TOO far for the time I will have. The place looks nice though!

You are correct in that Springbrook State Park isn't as close to the city of Des Moines as is the Ledges State Park but maybe it will help if you consider that Guthrie County is part of the Des Moines Metro area according to the Census Bureau definition. It's a mental thing in that regard.
But yes, it is a beautiful park & easily accessible to metro Des Moines & especially to the folks in Dallas County which borders Guthrie to the east. And as I noted earlier, Guthrie County has a lot of attractive topography that makes a drive in that area quite pleasant.
As you may have already discovered, the park has a small lake & assorted facilities for enjoying that as well as for staying overnight. Springbrook also has woodsy walking trails which we found to be great birdwatching territory.
