I second the recommendations here of both Indianola & Pella as being worthy of investigation.
Yet another community to consider would be Waverly, just 20 miles north of Cedar Falls.
Of Decorah, Pella, Indianola & Waverly, the only one that is fairly isolated & not close to a metro area would be Decorah. But Decorah is easily the most scenic of the 4 communities.
I've always enjoyed the extra spark found in college towns & university cities & all 4 towns have a college.
If you could be interested in a noticeably larger city of around 40,000 population, you might even throw Cedar Falls into the mix. It is immediately adjacent to it's larger sister city of Waterloo.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my post! I am pleased to say that after much conversation and consideration, we are now planning to retire to a small town in Wisconsin. Wish us luck!
