I never said Quebecor is moving out of Dubuque, I said they announced they have declared bankruptcy. They also said no jobs cuts are planned in Dubuque. We shall see on that.
Dubuqueaskme I get the impression you are with Greater Dubuque Development the way you promote Dubuque as Utopia. Below is list of companies and jobs lost. Georgia Pacific - for the most part have moved all manufacturing out of Dubuque. Flexsteel - Has laid off many workers and doubtful any of those jobs coming back. McKesson -79 job cuts and maybe more on the way. Quebecor - Bankruptcy and future status unknown. Now tell me what companies have come in and replaced those decent paying jobs. McDonalds, Burger King, The Casino, motels. retail stores. Now if you were to say Peosta is a growing area, you are correct. But for some reason you keep promoting Dubuque. Apparently you don't want people moving to your town and have a hidden agenda trying to get people to move to Dubuque with visions of prosperity awaiting them. Jasper Quote:

http://http://www.greaterdubuque.org/news/jobcreation.html (broken link)
The link above I have provided to JasperHobbs who denies the job growth in Dubuque. Dubuque's job growth outpaces Des Moines, Dubuque's job market rising 8.7% over the past five years, Des Moines, respectively, 7.3%. January is usually the worst month of the year for job growth, Rick Dickinson quotes. You would be right, if we were talking pre-2005, since that time, Dubuque has reached a unprecedented amount of growth not only in retail and the casino business, but also some in industrial services and companies. Yes, Peosta is indeed growing, but so is Dubuque... You are making Dubuque look like a declining city, and it definitely is not... the projects in the port, the condos on the bluff, amtrak service to chicago, and the southwest arterial... oh and don't let me forget, the airport. |

I would right now say the the good paying job losses far outweigh the good paying jobs coming in. Also when they do job stats they include all jobs including the majority of low paying service industry jobs that have come to Dubuque so the jobs numbers are a bit deceptive.
I would forget the Dubuque airport. Unless you like lost luggage, flight delays and higher airfare. I refuse to fly out of Dubuque anymore. Well worth the drive to Moline or O'Hare airport. I was right you are with Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, hence the constant Dubuque promoting. Jasper Quote:

Do you even live in the Dubuque area? It does not seem like it. It seems as you are rather oblivious to the good happenings in Dubuque, almost as if you do not live here and are just making up a false opinion. Either that or, you are very pessimistic.
The Dubuque Airport is expanding, tripling it's size shortly. How does a city that is losing jobs become an All-American City? How does a city that comes in the top 25 in terms of job growth LOSING jobs? Dubuque is a great city, and if you don't like it, and express so much negitavity toward it, why don't you find a different city? Oh, well, when you move to that city, will you point out all it's imperfections, too... If the job growth is immense in the city, will you deny it? If the city is an All-American City, or has been named one in the recent past, will you still express negitavity toward it? |

I have lived in Dubuque for 46 years whereas you don't live here at all. You live in Peosta so I would say I know more about Dubuque than you.
As far as Dubuque being named an all American city, big deal. Dubuque did a great job of selling the city and schmoozing whoever decides which town gets all American city status (for what thats worth) I am sure they didn't take them down some of the awful street fulls of pot holes or down the not so good part of town. I do know they spent a ton of money coloring sidewalks and buying flowers to dress up the town and then complain they don't have money for city services. You keep hammering on that top 25 in terms of job growth. Well the country is in a recession so job growth is slow in a lot of places and Dubuque as it always has is going after tourist buck with casinos hence the creation of all the low paying service jobs that have numbers skewed. Try this formula and tell me Dubuque is in top 25 for job growth New jobs - jobs lost =? New jobs paying same wage as jobs lost =? The Dubuque airport can increase size 10 times but unless they get reasonable flight prices and better service then they are still the same joke of an airport as thought of now. You keep evading question, do you work for Greater Dubuque Development Corp? Jasper Quote:

Jasper, I'm staying out of this one, but I don't think trying to guess dubuqueaskme's employment is your alley to walk down IMO.

In 2006 when we were named in the top 25 for job growth in Dubuque, WE WERE NOT in a recession. We aren't even in a recession, now. Get your facts straight. And it is none of your business who I work for.
I fly from Dubuque to Chicago almost once a month for business. The prices are not terrible, and will go down when we get another carrier here in Dubuque. Employment in Dubuque usually hits the bottom in January, and bounces back through the Spring and Summer, and falls back down in the fall and winter. I know a lot of elected officials in the city of Dubuque, and *may even be* an elected official in the city... Whether or not is none of your business, it irritates me that you think I am evading your question of my employment when it is not even mandatory/necessary/your business AT ALL.... Dubuque is definitely growing, the evidence is here, deny it as you may. |

Oh, and I dont know Dubuque? Where in the heck do you think I do all my grocery shopping, where do I go to work? Where do most of my friends live? Where do I get my clothes? Which city did I grow up in....
The answer to all those questions is DUBUQUE. To say that I do not know Dubuque is invalid, untrue, and ridiculous, unless you know what you are talking about, keep your fingers off the keyboard. |

Wow you are getting testy. If you love Dubuque so much why do you live in Peosta? Could it be you don't want to pay high property taxes or are worried about the bad elements in Dubuque and don't feel safe?

I would hope you are not an elected official, it would be sad to have an elected official promoting a neighboring town.
