The closest Amtrak station to Des Moines is at Osceola which is located 2 counties south of Des Moines & near I-35.
If you are hoping for rail travel convenience from Chicago directly on into Des Moines, it's not available.
It's unfortunate that Amtrak crosses Iowa from East to west in a southern Iowa route that roughly parallels U.S. Highway 34.
The earlier megabus (or some other bus line) suggestion would be more convenent & provide direct Chicago to Des Moines service at a low cost.

I live in the Chicago suburbs and went to Drake. They are correct that the only thing out there is Megabus (which starts at Union Station downtown and stops in Iowa City and then DSM). It is also the cheapest.

If you can get a ride to/from Osceola to take Amtrak, that works too.

Either way you would still need to get to/from the city in order to board. Are you on a Metra line?

Before I had a car I relied on other friends to carpool back and forth. There is always someone going to Chicago.

What Northwest burb are you in? I used to live up in Crystal Lake and there is no good transportation from there.
