I find both cities to be relative safe and do not have any worries. I visit my brother in the Des Moines area and friend in the Omaha area and have no problems. I know what areas to avoid and use common sense.

Well, as an outsider's perspective, they seem roughly the same to me.
Both are financial centers.
Both under 1mil. people; DSM is half the size of Omaha though, so on some levels it isn't even a fair comparison.
Both have a river running through them
Both have roughly the same terrain
Both are medium sized cities on the plains.
What is the point of this thread anyway? These cities are so much alike you people look stupid when you have these pissing matches over DSM vs Omaha.

What do you think over half of this entire website forum is? Comaprisons just like this. I don't know if I would say it's "stupid."

I would.
It is stupid to compare the two cities (unless a person has a specific question).
There. I feel better now.

I have a freind who lives in Omaha and was originally from the Des Moines area who likes some aspects of Omaha and some of Des Moines.
Regarding the debate, both cities are great cities. The two cities are cleaner than a number of the rust-belt cities that are of the metro area size, 500,000-800,000.

These are two great cities which complement one another well (make a nice commercial 'Triangle' with KC included too).

I like both having lived in each of them. I do like the Old Market area of Omaha. It's what Kansas City is trying to do with their downtown. Speaking of K.C., I don't think that city really cares about any association with Omaha or Des Moines. It just think of them as towns, expecially D.M.

Well some Local "big time" developers from Kansas City seem to REALLY care about association with Omaha and Des Moines. Most notably, Townsend, Inc.

I'm not sure the local KC people would really consider Townsend... 'big time'.
(their 'Wallstreet Tower' was just a rehab)

Perhaps. I just think people in K.C. look at Des Moines the same way people in D.M look at Ottumwa.
