Also, one other thought about Iowa City. I have never dissed IC because I do like the place and visit there once in awhile. I've always had fun there. It is a nice cultural oasis in a state that could use more of that. Of course there are a lot of very smart people there (doctors, med students, "some" lawyers, some profs) with very broad tastes and world views.
There are a percentage of ppl though, that are so into Iowa Hawkeyes sports that it is kind of ridiculous. Everyone has the right to pursue whatever makes them happy, for sure, but it just seems like a herd mentality that this group is so focused on how a bunch of 18-22 year old kids are performing on the field or court.
Looking at some of these sports message boards, it appears their world has come to an end when the Hawks end up 6-6 or don't go to a bowl. Their whole vacation/life was planned around Iowa going to a bowl, etc. It just seems they could put all this energy and time into maybe something more productive like maybe inventing something, or curing something, or starting a business, I don't know?
I just know that when I'm around this group, I really have nothing to say because I really don't care if Iowa loses some 18 year old recruit to Michigan or some missed play on the field causes them to lose. But all the talk seems to center around that and really doesn't go beyond Hawkeye sports. I'm standing there thinking these people really need to get a life.
Anyway, like I said, this is not everyone, but just an outsiders view. If this is what they like fine, and I'm sure there are ppl like this (even more so) in places like Columbus, Ann Arbor, etc.

While I do agree that there are a pretty large number of those people in Iowa City, I think it's like that in most college towns that have at least pretty good sports teams...such as in Iowa City, Ann Arbor, or Columbus. Maybe you're just so shocked by it here because in places like LAmes you don't see people planning their vacations/lives around the Cyclones. Probably because if they did, there would be a lot of people who ended up very disappointed with their pathetic lives. Let's face it...the only "bowl" game that the Cyclones ever go to is the Iowa - Iowa State game every year. That's their claim to fame every year, whether or not they beat the Hawkeyes. It's kind of sad really. I know that was a bit off topic but I couldn't resist ripping on the 'Clones for a minute...it makes me feel so good to point out the shortcomings of LAmes and it's pathetic excuse for a college football team.

Oh and for the record I'd like to point out that I am not one of those people who plan their vacations around the Hawkeyes. But I am definitely a die-hard Hawk fan and proud of it as well!

Ames definitely needs to improve its miserable downtown, but it is not the worst place on earth. Seems pretty clean, but not overly exciting. Iowa City is much better, but it is not exactly Austin, TX or Madison either.

whoa whoa whoa, Austin is a cesspool. Madison is ok though.
And when you have Christiansen as your QB you could lose to a damn high school team on any given night. God that guy sucks at football.

IC has been my home for most of my life, yet I still find football game days more notable for their inconvenience than for fun. All the out of towners think because they are here for the game it is ok to shout starting at 6 am, pee on my lawn and leave trash in the street. It might be a time for festivities, but that doesn't justify trashing my street and yard. Basically have to plan not to go anywhere for several hours on any football day. And you can forget about getting into the UI hospitals in an emergency -- there are parking Nazis that don't let hospital employees in the ramps on game day--"football parking only". Ridiculous (and dangerous).

That's a shame they don't even have adequate parking ramps that are used for the stadium. They shouldn't have to substitute hospital parking.

It's an inconvenience for the hospital staff, for sure, but I really doubt that the "parking Nazis" would prevent emergency access in the name of football. I imagine that's one of the functions of the many police around the stadium on game day is to make sure people get through that need to get through.
Also, from a design standpoint, there's a reason why the emergency room is on the other side of the hospital from the stadium...

word.
And I live in University Heights, smack dab in the middle of the football craziness and have no problem getting out of my area and across town (before or after the game when its a mad house). There are several roads you avoid such as melrose, sunset, benton but even though I have to get on either sunset or benton to get out of the area (which theres no need to since its fricken HAWKEYE football for crying out loud, I haven't missed a game in 20 years) its only a short detour to get downtown.
