I think the average rent around here is going to be around $600-$650. I'm sure you can find something for around $550 a month though, just pick up a copy of apartment finder. I like the apartments around Fleur Ave or pretty much anywhere SW. Unless it's way out west of Fleur, you've got good access to downtown too.

Unless you qualify for some income restricted units, it will probably be tough to find any rentals in Des Moines at the $550 price point. There may be some real s-holes in town for that price, but nothing decent...

A quick look at craigslist tells me that $550 is possible, but it's not going to be the best apartment in the best part of town. If you could get up to the $600-650 range you'd have a lot more options.

Or if you went in with your brother, I imagine you could find a much nicer two-bedroom on your combined resources.

On neighborhoods: Ingersoll is a nice neighborhood with a lot of apartment buildings close to downtown. Drake neighborhood's getting better, but some areas can be a little dicey still. The east/southeast side is going to be significantly cheaper, but a little more dangerous. Good luck!

I'd look in the Grand-Ingersoll area (west of downtown). It's 5 minutes to Downtown, has decent bus service, and has most services in the immediate vicinity. It's also central to everything in the metro.
