As Iowa is very white and mainstream, I assume it is nice place to live in. Especially if you have family with children.

Everyone realizes they're talking about some six month old posts, right? Just wanted to make sure we're on the same page.

Hi GA boy, old Ga woman here from Fort Benning. I live in Columbus Ga, the armpit of the South. My twin sister moved to Cedar Rapids ten years ago, and she would not come back here in a casket. These wierd magazines have rated Columbus Ga and Atlanta as the the second and fourth best places to live. Ha! Go to the Columbus Georgia forum. Anyone with money doesn't live in this city, yet they praise it to the hilt; mostly government city officials. They know where their bread is buttered. If you don't live North of Atlanta, don't move to GA. I tried to move to Iowa with my twin, last year but ran into trouble, with everything from the flood, to the apartments...but I have not given up getting out of this hell hole of Columbus Ga. Well, at least Fort Benning is pretty. (Old military brat) In and out of Columbus since '62 (This ain't no Andy of Mayberry town) Gangs, mean people, people leaving the city....not Columbus. If you come here, stay on the base, it is nice out there. My dad is buried on main post. It is a hassle just getting to the cemetary now, but once I get my pass, I go to the cemetary and then ride around main post to reminisce. Best of luck

Default Grain of salt

So when you read that certain parts of the state are in decline, all white, conservative, liberal... whatever ... take it with a grain of salt. Some guy leaving 3 hours away says southeast Iowa is in decline, yet we've had four major employers (two from Italy, one from Denmark and one from France) locate in the region in the last couple years. The African American population is growing, but still relatively low at 15 percent, and the area has one of the oldest established Hispanic populations in the midwest.
We've got recreation on the Mississippi River, we've got hiking, biking, a thriving local music scene, but unfortunately a lot of people haven't visited or left the house and are still complaining about the same things that bothered them years ago.
I relocated here from Chicago 30 years ago -- tried to move back to Chicago once, but EEEEK. I came running home

I just read the first page of this thread and laughed my ass off. I think it's worth reviving. Especially your comment about Ga Boy having "his fingers in too many pies". lol

And yes, I realize your post is several months old as well.

I would suggest Cedar Falls. Check in to CFU...Sartori Hospital for your wife...or hospitals in W'loo- Allen, Covenant... Cedar Falls has the Sturgis Falls festival in the summer which is really fun. There are quite a few farmers markets in the summer. Good luck! You might check into Wisconsin too. It's really beautiful there.
