Hello, we are 2 gay semi retired guys who work from home looking to move to Cedar Rapids. We don't do the bar thing and not real active in the gay community. We are originally from Chicago now living in Santa Fe NM. Any help would be appreciated with the area. We like either semi rural or city living, we want a house. I don't want a suburban feel with young couples and children. I have looked at Marion near Marion downtown but I don't know Cedar Rapids neighborhoods. Just want to be safe, good people as neighbors and trees.

Any ideas for an area that is safe and would work for us ?

Marion near downtown is an option but a lot of the houses there are pretty run down. There are a few streets that have some nicely restored older houses that would probably work for what you want or if you are into restoring houses, there are several options there. You could also look in the Beaver Park/Country Club area of Cedar Rapids. Very established neighborhoods, safe, and a convenient area. There are some lofts downtown that are pretty nice, not a house, and not sure of your price range, but the downtown area is nice and getting nicer as more and more businesses expand there.

Thank you so much for your reply. Not looking for Downtown or restoring a house, been there, we are gardeners. High end of the range is maybe 135,000, small house, 1400 sq ft or less. Beaver park/Country Club sounds good I will look into that area. I am scared Marion may be lots of young families with Kids. Thank you

Semi rural? Zip code 52411. It used to be "out of town" but growth has annexed it in. Just google it, then pull up the map and pick any random street on "street view" and you'll see.

Beaver Park/Country Club is near Waterloo according to the map, not Cedar Rapids ?

Try Bever Park/Cedar Rapids Country Club

I agree the Bever Park area sounds like a good choice for you. Also around Memorial Ave off Mount Vernon Rd. That whole area is nice but there are some sketchy areas around Bever Ave as you get closer to downtown. You can tell by the look of the neighborhood.

If you are going to look at the Bever park area, I wouldn't go too far west of there.... that is on the edge of the worst crime area in the whole metro area. You are not going to find much for $130,000 though, at least not in a low crime part of town. Try looking at the area between about 15th to 30th St and 10th to 22nd Ave in Marion. Older part of town that is for the most part not run down. Pretty quiet... a lot of older people live there, but there are new families moving in with children too. But definitely not over run with kids. Can sometimes find a smaller home in the $130's there.

You will find a good population mix in Marion, yes, lots of families but also lots of older couples who may be empty nesters or whatnot.
