Ya Minnesota personalities are very similar to *most* Iowa personalities ... People from Minnesota seem to like Iowa when they move here too. I can see what LPerkins was saying.

I would have to say that the culture differences between Iowa and Minnesota are shocking. My husband and I were born and raised in Iowa, and lived in different areas of Iowa. We left the state for the first time to the Twin Cities and have been very surprised at how different people are here. My vote is Iowa is vastly different from Minnesota. Both people and definately environment.

I haven't lived in the other states, so it would be hard to say. I can only comment on what I have actually experienced. I think Iowans are much more friendly and laid back. It was much easier to make friends in Iowa. But then again, that could be city versus rural. Des Moines doesn't have that city feeling like Minneapolis does. I think most people in this area are two income families. To find moms at home with kids is uncommon. In all of the places I lived in Iowa I never had any trouble hooking up with other SAHMs. When we lived in Ankeny my neighborhood was full of moms and kids at home. Neighbors made an effort to get to know each other and help each other out. That is a big cultural difference in my opinion. I think people are more down to earth in Iowa. Of course I am making generalizations. This is just my experience.

I think it depends heavily on what part of the state you are in. NE Iowa could be Wisconsin for all intents and purposes. A lot of southern Iowa has the Missouri (southern) accent. And I've noticed people in western IA resemble NE and KS folks in some ways.
Probably the only "true" Iowans are people in the middle of the state ![]() |
