indeed. And you'll have to lose the typical "Holier than thou" Californian attitude.

Iowa City is a fun town just watch out for the cops, they love messing with out of staters.

You are going to love U of I and Iowa City. I think over 40% of students at Iowa are from out of state, so it's a nice mix. Just have fun and enjoy the ride - four years flies by!

Well, what do you want to know? I'd hate to think you decided to go to school here without doing a little looking up of your own first. Of course, if you picked the UI out of a hat...you could certainly do worse.

Iowa City is a big party college town. Like mentioned, a large part of the campus is upper class students from the Chicagoland area, so there are lots of upscale bars and dance clubs (at least, much different than you'd imagine in a small Iowa town).

Default IC scoop

What sort of "Social Environment" info are you looking for? Are you coming for undergrad? Grad/professional program? Are you bringing a family or just you?

In general, Iowa City is much more liberal than most of Iowa. For instance, it has been labelled the Athens of the midwest, and also the "Gay Capitol" of Iowa. Total college town, relatively safe, and extremely educated (#2 in the country for the highest per capita # of graduate degrees, second only to Rochester MN -- Mayo). Politically correct. Demographics are more racially varied than most of Iowa (but that's a pretty slow race). Interestingly, there are more Asian people here than African American or Latino, which I would guess is related to the University.

Lots to do if you look. I had friends in school who complained about nothing to do, but had never been to the Univ art museum, natural history museum, musical performances, or to hear any visiting authors. Just need to be a little proactive. Not so many concerts here -- but enough comes through CR or quad cities to be OK -- or just make the 4-5 hr drive to Chicago, Minneapolis, or St Louis now and then for a big show.

Best of luck. Consider changing your tag -- you'll be more likely to get responses to your posts.
