My Greatgrandfather settled in Mormontown (Blockton) probably about the end of the Civil War. He seemed to operate a mercantile or general store there for some time.
A book published for the Blockton Centennial in 1961 has a blurb mentioning him. "... Mormontown now has several excellent stores. It is also blessed with a fine flouring-mill, which furnishes it with power. P.J. Wisdom is the Nasby, and his office supplies a large country with its mails..." Wisdom is my GGF. I've looked in numerous slang dictionaries to no avail. Does anyone know the word Nasby? Thanks for your efforts! |
